The twelve animals of the Chinese lunar calendar make up this set of gold coins released by the Australian Mint. They have become extremely popular the world over as an alternative to bullion and are sometimes referred to as 'semi-numismatic' as they correlate to the price of gold yet each command a strong collectors premium. For the 1 oz coin, the planned mintage was 30,000 for each coin. Subsequent information indicates that for some years, barely half that number were released.
