In 1982 China began it's most popular series of coins that continues to this day - the Panda Coin. Issued in various sizes in four precious metals over nearly thirty years now, the series has drawn collectors, investors and animal lovers alike to the charming depictions of this iconic and quite remarkable creature. The following year the gold panda coin was released in a fifth size - a tiny 1/20 oz coin and accompanied by the inaugural year of the silver panda. The silver coin is held in high regard by collectors. Weighing 27 grams of .900 silver it has a mintage of 10,000 pieces. This is low number for the key date coin to the series, a series that includes 27 gram coins in years 1984 and 1985 before the standardized unit of 1 oz was used for proof coins up until the final year in 1996. Along the way there were larger issues, up to one kilogram in weight but by far the most popular is this smaller size.
