China 1993 1 oz Gold Panda
100 Yuan Brilliant Uncirculated Coin
About the China 1993 1 oz Gold Panda 100 Yuan Brilliant Uncirculated Coin
The coin pictured above is one of twenty-three 1993 panda coins. Of the twenty-three coins issued in this year, thirteen are gold, six are silver, two are platinum, one is copper, and one is bi-metallic. The reverse of the coins in this series show different images of pandas. The obverse of the coins all bear the inscription: “The People's Republic of China”. Below this inscription on all coins in the group, with the exception of the copper coin, is an image of the Temple of Heaven with its iconic set of stairs leading up to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, below which is the year of production, 1993.
Prayers and sacrifices were made by the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) Dynasty emperors at the Temple of Heaven during the winter solstice. The Temple of Heaven was completed in 1420 AD and prayers and sacrifices were made there in the hope of a good harvest until they were banned by the government of the Republic of China in 1911.
This is the 100 yuan, 1 oz gold coin of the series issued in 1993. It is a brilliant uncirculated (BU) coin of 99.9% purity and has a mintage of 40,449. When this coin was issued in 1993 both a large date and a small date variety were produced. The large date version was minted in Shanghai, while the small date variety was minted in Shenyang.
The reverse of the coin shows an image of a solitary panda sitting on a rocky outcrop surrounded by bamboo shoots. The denomination is inscribed to the left of the image. Around the top left edge of the reverse face is an inscription pertaining to the specifications of the coin. It reads: “.999 Au 1 oz”.
Starting in 1982, a 1 oz gold BU panda coin has been issued each year. Having one coin from each year makes a collectable series. These coins tend to sell for a small premium above the gold market price and make a very good defensive investment largely due to the bullish nature of the long term gold market.
