About the 1994 1/20 oz Platinum Panda 5 Yuan Proof Coin
Shown above is the highly sought after and difficult to come by 1994 1/20oz platinum Panda coin. It was issued in 1994 as part of the world-renowned Panda series. Additionally, it is one of a collectible set of 14 coins which comprises one of each of the 1/10oz platinum and 1/20oz platinum coins ever produced. The 1994 1/20oz platinum Panda pictured is a 14mm diameter proof coin with a face value of 5 yuan, a purity of 99.95%, and a mintage of 5,000. Although this mintage would not normally make this coin especially rare, many of the original coins were made into various items of jewelery, and as a result, it is rare to find one of these coins in collector condition.
Seen on the obverse face is the Temple of Heaven, built during the 18th year of the reign of the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and situated in Beijing. The importance of this temple is exemplified by the fact that the complex covers an area of 2,700,000 square metres, an area greater than that of the Forbidden City. Above the temple is inscribed: “The People's Republic of China”. Underneath the image is “1994”, the year of issue.
A panda sitting among bamboo plants by a body of water is the designed shown on the reverse face. Below the design is the face value, 5 yuan, while above and to the left around the edge of the coin face is a short inscription giving the metallic properties of the coin: “.9995 1/20oz Pt”.
