1995 1/20 oz Platinum Panda
5 Yuan Proof Coin
About the 1995 1/20 oz Platinum Panda 5 Yuan Proof Coin
The coin pictured above is the 1995 1/20oz platinum Panda. This proof quality coin has a denomination of 5 yuan, measures 14mm in diameter, has an official mintage of 10,000, and is of 99.95% fineness. Panda coins are issued each year by the People's Bank of China. This coin is one of 18 Panda coins issued in 1995. For collectors, it is also one of a particularly challenging set to acquire which comprises one of every 1/10oz and 1/20oz platinum Panda coin. Even though this coin's official mintage is not low by any standards, one significant factor contributing to the rarity of this coin is its use in jewellery and pendants. Since many were made into such items, it is seldom that this coin is seen for sale in original mint packaging with a condition suitable for discerning collectors.
The obverse face of the coin features an image of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests - the most important structure in the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Emperors made offerings up to Heaven from this site throughout the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties in the hope for a plentiful harvest and political stability within the Empire. Below the image appears the year of production, 1995. Above appear the characters: “The People's Republic of China”.
The reverse face features a finely detailed image of a panda holding a bamboo plant in both paws. The leaves hang down above it. The brief specifications of the coin appear to the right of the image around the edge of the coin face: “.9995 1/20oz Pt”. The denomination, 5 yuan, is struck to the left of the image.
