CoinEx Research: Solana GameFi, A New Promising Project, Or Another Hokum?

2021-11-01 10:34:12

By the summer of 2021, GameFi has undoubtedly been the most unexpected rise in the blockchain industry. Like the DeFi boom in 2019, numerous investors participated in the project, inspiring a GameFi craze. In addition to Ethereum upgrades, the emergence of new public chains also paved the way for the flourishment of GameFi.

Since CryptoKitties, Ethereum was found unfit for game projects due to the high gas fees and limited throughput capacity. Thus, the developers turned to new public chains that support higher concurrency and charge lower fees. Solana has become the best choice among all the new chains, with its TPS exceeding 2,400 and a negligible $0.00025 transaction fee. With all the above, GameFi projects on Solana are in full swing. And in this article, we will give a brief introduction of some of the projects.

GameFi projects on Solana

1. Star Atlas

Official website: https://staratlas.com/

Star Atlas, the most-anticipated GameFi project on Solana by far, has caught broad attention with the exquisite promotional video and the Sci-Fi-styled UI design of its official website. It is a multiverse game set in the year 2620, where three factions split control. One is MUD, ruled by humans, the second is ONI, made up of aliens, and the last is Ustur, controlled by sentient robots. Players can choose a faction to join and battle for resources, land, and dominion for the community to win the token rewards according to the contributions in the game.

Star Atlas also features DAO, mining, NFT, and Play-to-Earn elements that make this interstellar adventure exciting and challenging. In the game, every item is an NFT and can be traded for equipment, land, etc. In terms of tokens, the game has adopted a dual currency model. ATLAS, the game currency, is used for in-game transactions and purchases, whereas POLIS, the governance token, is used for governance decisions regarding the game.

2. Aurory

Official website: https://aurory.io/

Aurory is a Japanese-style RPG that was created in honor of PokemonGo. In this game, the players will explore different areas in the universe, use their own monsters (or Nefties) to fight enemies, and win reward for victory. Though the game is not available yet, the trailer shows that there are two game modes. One is a single-player mode that offers Nefties card reward for quest levels completed along the storyline. The other is a multi-player mode, where players can stake their tokens and NFTs for rewards, or bet them in a PVP battle where the winner takes all.

Like Star Atlas, Aurory has also adopted a dual currency model. Players use SPL as the medium of exchange for in-game purchases and transactions, and use AURY as the governance token for the game.

3. Project SEED

Official website: https://projectseed.io/

Project SEED is the first multi-chain gaming ecosystem encompassing game studios, GameFi, DAO, and NFT markets. In this game, players can choose from three main classes: Mercenary, Archery, and Alchemist, as well as six professions: Blacksmith, Tailor, Chef, Carpenter, Alchemist, and Breeder. Each profession corresponds to a specific type of store, and players need to upgrade the store step by step.

In the game, players hunt splendor beasts called the Zeds to loot items such as equipment or items for sale or collect monster materials to forge weapons or armors. Also, they can join a guild and win tokens or items in guild tournaments.

SHILL is the token used in the game, whether for trading, staking, or governance. Players can acquire SHILL by purchasing NFTs or winning tournament battles.

4. OpenEra

OpenEra is an MMORPG inspired by classics like RuneScape and Albion Online. It aims to develop a virtual space where players can live, create and explore. It is a world where players craft unique items with special properties from complex biomes and their own stories bounded by trust, reputation, or perhaps by mutually enforceable agreements.

At present, OpenEra still has no official website, and the development progress is slow. Its further performance remains to be seen.

5. DeFi Land

Official website: https://defiland.app/

DeFi Land is an online multi-chain agriculture simulator that intends to gamify Decentralized Finance and help users get started with DeFi products in a seamless way. For example, in DeFi land, each crop represents a cryptocurrency, say, SOL and ETH can be visually described as corn and apples. DeFi Land has also aggregated various DeFi protocols (such as lending, AMM, etc.), allowing players to easily manage their assets and carry out DeFi activities while playing the game. In addition to planting tokens, players can also collect rewards by completing tasks and winning battles.

6. SOLife

Official website: https://solife.town/

SOLife is an NFT strategy game inspired by The Game of Life - a board game that covers a lifetime starting from birth to death. In the game, players can experience different life paths according to their beliefs and gain a sense of achievement with missions completed. Players will purchase a baby card at the beginning, which resembles the birth of a baby. After that, the baby card that participates in the game will age by a year every 3 hours, where players choose life directions by performing a mission or selecting an option every ten game years. When a season comes to an end, the baby card that has grown through the game becomes a one-and-only unique Monument card, which resembles the character’s death. After that, the players will decide whether to stake the Monument card and use it next season, which resembles the character’s reincarnation.

7. Genopets

Official website:https://www.genopets.me/

Genopets is a Move-to-Earn game similar to PokemonGo, where users earn tokens by winning battles, training pets, and jogging in the real world. Its symbolic creature, Genopet, is a generative spirit animal NFT that sports a uniquely marked body with eight variable bionic features and extremities, falling under the category of one of five elemental types. All players may summon and mint their Genopet for free. Starting as an infant, a Genopet can traverse 77 levels of upgrades and 12 stages of material evolution with an endless amount of customization to make it unique. Genopets grow and evolve based on the XP you earn battling with friends, soloing PvE bosses, walking your dog, and going on your after-dinner jog.

8. Solchicks

Official website: https://www.solchicks.io/

Solchicks incorporates the cute image of chicks into the battle game. In the game, each Solchick is an NFT, 10,000 NFTs in total, with randomly generated attributes. Players use Solchicks to participate in the PvP and Raids Gameplays.

9. Ninja Protocol

Official website: https://ninjaprotocol.io/

Ninja Protocol is an ARPG of exploration and combats with ninja avatars. There are three tiers of Ninja in the game, including Baby NINJA, NINJA Apprentice, and NINJA Warrior. Players need to kill enemies to earn XP to level up. NINJA is the token of the Ninja Protocol ecosystem and can be used for profit share, governance, and access to Ninja Protocol products. The game is not available yet and is still in development.

Conclusion

This article is only a selection of quality projects with good attention within Solana’s ecosystem. Unlike the previous gambling games and card games, these projects are of exquisite graphics and better game design, bringing blockchain games even closer to conventional web games, a pretty significant leap for GameFi products. In addition, these games have embedded Play-to-Earn and NFT elements in the economic model, changed the previous “money-squandering” games into “capital-attracting” projects, and significantly increased user experience and loyalty. Though most of these games have yet to be launched, and the actual performance of the games is still unknown, projects on Solana, the high-performance public chain, are worth waiting for.
