Israeli Military Strikes Iran's Maroun Shar Petrochemical Site Again, Iran Threatens to Expand Retaliation Scope

BlockBeats News, June 8th. The Israeli military announced on June 8th local time that it carried out an airstrike on the major petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, southern Iran. This is the first time since the ceasefire agreement reached on April 7th that Israel has struck the facility again.

The targeted Bandar Imam Petrochemical Complex is Iran's largest petrochemical facility, consisting of over 50 plants with an annual capacity of approximately 72 million tons. Iranian media reported that the Karun Petrochemical Plant in the complex was hit twice around 7:30 a.m. on the same day. There have been no casualties reported so far, but the facility has been damaged.

The Israeli military stated that the target of this strike was a military facility involved in producing raw materials for Iran's ballistic missile program. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps condemned the attack as engaging in a "dangerous game" and warned of expanding retaliation against Israel, including targeting energy-related facilities.

This is the second attack on the Mahshahr petrochemical complex this year. In early April, the Israeli military disrupted the entire complex's production by targeting its public utilities, sparking criticism from the international community for Israel's attacks on Iran's civilian economic infrastructure.

As Iran progresses in economic diversification, petrochemical product exports account for about a quarter of its total exports. Israel has long argued that the complex is a "dual-use" facility, producing chemical raw materials that can be used for both civilian and military purposes, making it a legitimate target. However, according to international legal experts, even for dual-use facilities, any such attacks still need to adhere to the principle of proportionality under the Geneva Conventions.
