BlockBeats News, May 30th, Former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky filed a motion with a New York court seeking to overturn his 12-year prison sentence. In the filing, Mashinsky claimed that his defense attorney had issues of "ineffective assistance of counsel" and cited the "fruit of the poisonous tree" doctrine to argue that the relevant evidence was flawed. He stated that he was forced to submit the filing to the court pro se after his lawyer stopped communicating with him.
In the accompanying documents, Mashinsky accused former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried of attempting to "destroy Celsius" and attributed the manipulation of the CEL token's market to FTX. At the same time, he also accused former Celsius Chief Revenue Officer Roni Cohen-Pavon of attempting a "hostile takeover" of the company. Mashinsky was sentenced in 2025 for commodities and securities fraud and was ordered to pay a $48 million forfeiture and a $10 million civil settlement.
