BlockBeats News, May 8th - The United States Central Command stated that on Thursday this week, a U.S. Navy destroyer was attacked by the Iranian side while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, and the U.S. military promptly responded. According to the Central Command's statement, Iran's attack on three U.S. warships involved "multiple missiles, multiple drones, and several fast boats," but the "U.S. vessels were not hit." The statement said that U.S. forces "eliminated the threat and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking U.S. troops, including missile and drone launch sites, command and control centers, as well as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance nodes." The military command further stated that the U.S. "is not seeking an escalation of the situation but remains postured and prepared to protect U.S. forces."
Early on the 8th local time, a spokesperson for Iran's armed forces, Hatam Anbia Central Command, issued a statement alleging that the U.S. violated the ceasefire by targeting a tanker sailing from Iran's Jask coastal waters towards the Strait of Hormuz and another vessel entering the Strait from opposite Fujairah Port in the UAE. The statement claimed that the U.S., in coordination with some regional countries, conducted airstrikes on civilian areas along the coasts of Iran's Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchestan, and Bushehr provinces. The statement stated that Iran's armed forces had retaliated against U.S. military vessels east of the Strait of Hormuz and south of Chabahar Port, causing "significant damage."
A Fox News reporter revealed that a senior U.S. official stated that the U.S. carried out military strikes on Iran's ports of Jask and Abbas (early on the 8th Beijing time), but he also added that this was not a resumption of hostilities or termination of the ceasefire agreement. The attacks on Iran's oil ports occurred two days after Iran launched 15 ballistic and cruise missiles towards Fujairah Port in the UAE.
According to an ABC News journalist, U.S. President Trump stated that the retaliatory strikes on Iranian targets were just a "minor punishment." Trump said the ceasefire was in effect and working. He stated, "If Iran does not quickly sign the agreement, then in the future, we will deal with them in a more severe and intense manner." The latest conflict has escalated tensions in the region as the U.S. tries to extricate itself from a war that has entered its third month. The Trump administration has been waiting for Iran's response to its proposed reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war. It is currently unclear whether Iranian leaders will accept the terms of the agreement, although they have shown little willingness to compromise on the nuclear program and halt uranium enrichment—both key demands made by the U.S.
