  • Coin Introduction
1. Project introduction

Moonbeam is an Ethereum-compatible smart contract parachain on Polkadot. It is both a familiar and easy-to-use tooling of Ethereum and the scalable, interoperable architecture of Polkadot. Moonbeam is much more than just an EVM implementation: it’s a highly specialized Layer 1 chain that mirrors Ethereum’s Web3 RPC, accounts, keys, subscriptions, logs, and more. The Moonbeam platform extends the base Ethereum feature set with additional features such as on-chain governance, staking, and cross-chain integrations. Existing smart contract platforms are designed to service the users and assets on a single, specific chain. By providing cross-chain smart contract functionality, Moonbeam allows developers to shift existing workloads and logic to Moonbeam and extend the reach of their applications to new users and assets on other chains. Moonbeam's cross-chain integration is accomplished by becoming a parachain on the Polkadot network. The Polkadot network provides integration and connectivity between parachains that are connected to the network and to other non-Polkadot-based chains, such as Ethereum and Bitcoin, via bridges.

4. Application and distribution

Token application: GLMR (Glimmer token) is central to the design of Moonbeam and cannot be removed without sacrificing essential functionality. Some of the uses of the Glimmer token on Moonbeam include: (1) Supporting the gas metering of smart contract execution; (2) Incentivizing collators and powering the mechanics around the creation of a decentralized node infrastructure on which the platform can run; (3) Facilitating the on-chain governance mechanism including proposing referenda, electing council members, voting, etc; (4) Paying for transaction fees on the network.
