Celestia: The World’s First Modular Blockchain Network—A Game Changer for Blockchain Development
Celestia is a modular blockchain network designed to act as a data availability layer for rollups and layer 2 (L2) blockchains, mainly to enhance their scalability. By decoupling the execution layer from the consensus and data availability layers, Celestia allows developers to launch their blockchains focusing on specific functionalities. This architecture optimizes performance and makes it more accessible for developers and users alike.
Funding History and Founders
Celestia was co-founded by Mustafa Al-Bassam, Ismail Khoffi, and John Adler. Al-Bassam, who holds a Ph.D. from University College London, published the foundational paper titled "LazyLedger" in 2019, which laid the groundwork for the modular blockchain concept. The initiative gained visibility, ultimately raising more than $150 million in funding across multiple rounds, with notable contributions from prominent investors like Binance Lab.
Mechanism and Concept
The core mechanism of Celestia comprises several elements:
- Modular Architecture: Celestia’s architecture includes separate layers for consensus and data availability. This allows it to manage data for multiple blockchains without the heavy burden traditional networks face due to increasing transaction volume and data requirements.
- Data Availability Sampling (DAS): This innovative feature enables light nodes to verify the availability of data without needing to download entire blocks. Instead, they only sample small portions of the data, which makes validation much lighter and faster.
- Namespaced Merkle Trees (NMTs): This technology efficiently organizes data by namespaces, allowing smart contracts to interact only with the data relevant to them, thereby enhancing privacy and performance.
Recent News and Updates on Celestia
Ginger is a major network upgrade for Celestia designed to enhance user experience, security, and network performance. This upgrade doubles data availability throughput by reducing block times from 12 to 6 seconds, enabling faster transaction finality and paving the way for increased block sizes up to 8 MB, achieving 1.33 MB/s throughput.

Celestia recently revealed the results from its Mammoth Mini testnet, marking an important leap towards its goal of achieving 1GB blocks. The testnet demonstrated an impressive average data throughput of 27 MB/s with 88 MB blocks—this is a substantial increase compared to the network's initial 0.167 MB/s throughput, representing more than a 160x boost. Mammoth Mini aims to meet the growing demand for extreme data throughput and enhance the scalability of decentralized applications, especially in areas like payments, where it could handle hundreds of thousands of ERC-20 transactions per second.

The native token, TIA, was listed on CoinEx in October 2023. As of now, TIA price is approximately $5.195, with a 24-hour trading volume of around $262.64K.
By staking TIA, users can earn rewards by participating in network security and governance. The current 7-day Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for staking Celestia's native token, TIA, is more than 190%. This is subject to fluctuation and can vary depending on several factors.
Staking TIA allows users to earn rewards by contributing to the security of the Celestia ecosystem, and rewards can start accruing immediately after staking. Additionally, the rollup chains built on Celestia's modular architecture could offer DeFi opportunities, including yield farming and liquidity provision, further enhancing APY for early adopters. Early ecosystem incentives may also introduce higher yields, especially as new projects incentivize users.
