Berachain’s Rapid Growth: Is It Sustainable?
Berachain has quickly emerged as one of the most talked-about blockchain networks, boasting significant capital inflows despite a broader market downturn. However, its rapid rise has not been without challenges. From extreme volatility in its native token, BERA, to concerns over tokenomics and community trust, Berachain now stands at a critical juncture. As its airdrop phase ends, the network must prove whether its Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL) mechanism can sustain growth and establish Berachain as a long-term player in the blockchain space.
Berachain’s Capital Inflow Defies Market Trends
One of the most striking metrics for Berachain has been its capital inflow. As of March 20, the network recorded a net inflow of approximately $289.2 million over the past month, second only to Base. This performance is particularly impressive given the sluggish state of the broader crypto market, where many blockchain ecosystems have struggled to attract new capital.

In terms of total value locked (TVL), Berachain currently ranks seventh among all blockchain networks, trailing only industry giants such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BSC, Tron, and Base. This suggests that Berachain’s Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL) consensus mechanism has been effective in attracting staked capital. Among the ecosystem’s protocols, Infrared Finance—leveraging liquidity consensus—holds the highest amount of staked funds.

Proof-of-Liquidity: Enhancing Security and Capital Efficiency
The Proof-of-Liquidity (PoL) mechanism, as seen in Berachain’s model, offers several advantages over traditional consensus models like Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and Proof-of-Work (PoW), particularly in terms of capital efficiency and ecosystem growth. Unlike PoS, where validators must stake idle tokens, PoL requires them to provide liquidity within the network, ensuring that locked capital remains productive. This structure not only strengthens liquidity depth but also aligns incentives with DeFi adoption, as participants are encouraged to engage in lending, borrowing, and trading rather than simply staking for passive rewards.
Another key advantage of PoL is its ability to create a more sustainable security model. Since network security is tied to liquidity depth, chains with deeper liquidity become more resistant to manipulation and attacks, reducing the risks associated with low-liquidity ecosystems. Additionally, PoL helps mitigate sell pressure on the native token. In traditional staking models, validators often need to sell their staking rewards to cover costs, but PoL encourages tokens to remain actively utilized within DeFi protocols, reducing immediate sell-offs and fostering a more stable market environment.
PoL also promotes greater decentralization by rewarding liquidity providers rather than just large token holders, making network participation more equitable. This design reduces centralization risks and ensures that network security and governance are not concentrated in the hands of a few wealthy participants. By tying validator rewards to liquidity contributions, PoL aligns long-term incentives with ecosystem growth.
BERA Token Volatility and Market Performance
While Berachain’s Proof-of-Liquidity mechanism has played a key role in attracting capital and fostering network participation, the sustainability of its ecosystem ultimately hinges on the performance and stability of its native token, BERA.
Initially surging to $15 upon launch, the token experienced a sharp decline, a common pattern for large airdrop projects; however, BERA’s price movements have remained highly volatile, fluctuating between $5 and $9, with price swings as wild as a rollercoaster—soaring to dizzying heights before plunging back down in gut-wrenching drops.

The price of BERA has been highly volatile since its launch.
The capital inflows suggest that the majority of funds entered the Berachain ecosystem between February 16 and March 3, coinciding with key events such as its mainnet launch, testnet rollout, and airdrop claim phase. Despite this initial surge, Berachain’s TVL has since remained relatively flat, neither experiencing explosive growth nor significant declines due to market fluctuations.
Airdrop Controversy and Tokenomics Concerns
Berachain’s early growth was closely linked to its BERA token airdrop, but the distribution raised concerns over fairness. A significant gap emerged between NFT holders and regular test users in terms of rewards. Additionally, a blogger named Ericonomic revealed that one of Berachain’s co-founders sold 200,000 airdropped tokens—a move that the Berachain team never addressed.
A more fundamental controversy stems from BERA’s tokenomics. More than 34% of the total supply is allocated to investors, raising concerns about centralization and fairness. While early venture capital (VC) investors are unable to unlock their tokens yet, they can still stake them, a policy that many in the community view as unfair. In hindsight, Berachain’s anonymous co-founder, Smokey the Bera, admitted in an interview that if given another chance, they might not have sold such a large portion of the supply to VCs.
With the airdrop hype fading and BERA’s price fluctuating wildly, Berachain’s presence on social media has also waned, suggesting a need for new growth drivers beyond token incentives.
Berachain’s Future Hinges on PoL and Community Trust
As of March 20, Berachain has 60 validators—more than BNB Chain (21) but far fewer than Solana (around 1,900-2,000). When the airdrop phase ends, the key question is whether Berachain can sustain user engagement through PoL or if it will need to rely on ecosystem projects to drive growth.
The project appears to be placing its bets on governance and the continued success of PoL. However, lingering concerns—such as excessive VC allocations, questionable token distribution, and a lack of clear responses to community concerns—could erode trust over time. To establish itself as a long-term player, Berachain must prove that PoL is more than just a temporary yield mechanism and can serve as a sustainable foundation for DeFi adoption.
Ultimately, Berachain’s ability to balance decentralization, fair value distribution, and genuine ecosystem growth will determine whether it evolves into a lasting blockchain powerhouse or fades as another fleeting experiment in incentive-driven network design.
