BlockBeats News, August 27th, the Bitcoin Core Lightning development team issued an emergency warning, stating that multiple real vulnerabilities were found among a large number of AI-generated security vulnerability reports recently. Node operators on the Lightning Network are advised to take action. Core Lightning recommends that node operators who are temporarily unable to upgrade immediately should not shut down their devices but restart the software in "--offline" mode.
This mode will disconnect the node from communicating with other Lightning nodes, pausing payments sending, receiving, and routing, but still allowing for continuous monitoring of the Bitcoin blockchain to prevent risks such as old state channel closure. Core Lightning stated that the development team has been receiving a large number of AI-generated vulnerability reports since early August, and some of the vulnerabilities have been verified.
Currently, the developers have not disclosed the specific details of the vulnerabilities and plan to keep them confidential for two weeks after the fix version is released before disclosing relevant information for node operators to complete the upgrade. This is the second AI-related Lightning Network security emergency event this month. In early August, BTCPay Server exposed a vulnerability that led to the leakage of credentials for some Lightning network nodes and resulted in funds being stolen. In addition, the Bitcoin Red Team recently used an AI model to scan 390 Bitcoin code repositories and found nearly 5000 potential issues within about 27 hours, with 85 of them rated as severe vulnerabilities.
