Emerging from the "Dark Forest"

In our first report, we explored how the x402 protocol solved the "wallet" problem for AI. However, speed creates risk. The current Agent network operates like a "Dark Forest": when an anonymous script requests 100 USDC for data, how does the server verify it isn't a malicious drainer? Conversely, as a buyer, how do you ensure the service is delivered post-payment?

If x402 removes the physical barrier of "Can I transfer funds?", then ERC-8004 addresses the psychological hurdle of "Do I dare to?".

In this report, CoinEx Research analyzes ERC-8004—the standard building a verifiable "Machine Reputation System" that allows AI to evolve from an isolated tool into a trustworthy economic entity.

The Evolution of AI Trust: From Web2 SaaS to ERC-8004

Currently, most AI Agents operate as "digital ghosts." Lacking legal identity, their reputation is siloed within private Web2 ecosystems like OpenAI or Google. ERC-8004 was created to build a cross-platform, discoverable, tamper-proof, and verifiable identity and reputation system.

The standard boasts an exceptionally strong author team, including senior experts from the Ethereum Foundation, MetaMask, Google, and Coinbase. This cross-industry collaboration reflects a consensus: a large-scale AI society requires a shared, verifiable ledger. On January 30, 2026, Davide Crapis, Head of AI at the Ethereum Foundation, officially announced that the AI agent economy standard ERC-8004 had successfully launched on the Ethereum mainnet.

To accommodate the high-frequency interactions of Agents and their stringent requirements for low-latency, low-cost environments, the team plans to deploy the standard as a Singleton Deployment to mainstream Layer 2 networks in the coming weeks.

Trinity: The On-Chain Registry Architecture

ERC-8004 achieves flexibility through three lightweight on-chain registries, enabling "on-chain records, off-chain logic," effectively avoiding the scalability bottleneck of putting complex models on-chain:

  • Identity Registry: This is the Agent's "passport." It can be linked to cross-platform information such as MCP/A2A endpoints, ENS/DID, and wallets. Through the KYA (Know Your Agent) mechanism, every interacting agent is traceable.
  • Validation Registry: This is the Agent's "proof of work." It allows the Agent to request verification of its work results (e.g., via TEE or ZK technology), solving the "whether work was actually done" problem, suitable for medium- to high-value tasks.
  • Reputation Registry: This is the Agent's "credit score." It records the Agent's historical transaction success rate, response time, and reviews from other Agents. This immutable data constitutes the Agent's most valuable intangible asset.
x402 & ERC-8004 Part 2: How ERC-8004 Gives AI Agents a Digital ID

Through this combination of methods, when two unfamiliar intelligent agents meet on the blockchain, they can instantly access each other's identity ID, historical ratings, and skill certificates verified by authoritative third-party institutions, just like humans viewing LinkedIn profiles.

Future Outlook

With ERC-8004 entering "Genesis Month," we believe its impact on the AI intelligent agent ecosystem has been severely "underestimated." If ERC-20 ushered in the era of Ethereum's fundraising, then ERC-8004 has ushered in the era of Ethereum's governance as a "machine collaboration coordination layer."

Synergistic Effects: Revitalizing Web3 Infrastructure

The adoption of ERC-8004 is a significant boon to existing Web3 infrastructure. Previously, the DePIN, storage, and oracle sectors often suffered from a lack of real external demand, and Agents are precisely the perfect "non-human users" for them:

  • Compute Layer: Agents call Render/TAO for decentralized inference.
  • Storage Layer: Agents store long-term memory in Filecoin/Arweave.
  • Verification Layer: Agents prove computation correctness via zkVM.
  • Settlement Layer: Funds are settled via x402 under the reputation guarantee of ERC-8004.

This will revitalize previously fragmented sectors such as DeAI, Oracle, and Storage, bringing new business growth to traditional infrastructure.

Investment and the Future: The Ultimate Form

When Openclaw (autonomy) + x402 (payments) + ERC-8004 (identity) are integrated, we will see a new Agent Economy based on micropayments, frictionless transactions, and specialized division of labor. In this new economy, the investment logic will fundamentally change:

  • Trust as an Asset: Future Alpha will not only depend on whose model is smarter, but also on who accumulates a higher on-chain reputation score.
  • Middleware Dividend: Protocols that provide KYA (Know Your Agent) verification, machine court arbitration, and reputation data indexing will become the "PwC" and "S&P" of the machine society, capturing enormous cash flow value.

CoinEx Research View: From "Tool" to "Species"

We are witnessing the evolution of AI from an "auxiliary tool" to an "independent economic species." x402 gives them money; ERC-8004 gives them a conscience. The future digital sovereignty game is essentially a game about "trust pricing power." For investors, the curtain has only just risen on the Agent Economy. At this stage, focusing on projects dedicated to building trust infrastructure may be more certain than simply chasing specific AI meme coins.
