Namecoin is an experimental open-source technology which improves decentralization, security, censorship resistance, privacy, and speed of certain components of the Internet infrastructure such as DNS and identities.

For the technically minded, Namecoin is a key/value pair registration and transfer system based on the Bitcoin technology. Namecoin is a peer-to-peer, completely decentralised system based on Bitcoin technology that allows everyone to register names. After you own a name, no-one can take it from you without your consent, and you can associate data with it that everyone can be sure originated from you but which can neither be forged nor censored by unauthorised attackers.
