Berkshire Shifts from Patiently Waiting to Taking Action, Ending 14-Quarter Net Selling Streak, Q2 Net Stock Purchases of About $20 Billion
  • GOOGLX0%

BlockBeats News, August 8th: Berkshire Hathaway released its Q2 2026 Financial Report today. The most notable point was that the cash reserves in the second quarter dropped to $365.51 billion, down from around $397.4 billion in the first quarter. This marks the end of Berkshire's net selling cycle for 14 consecutive quarters, turning into significant net buying for the first time since Q4 2022.

In the second quarter, Berkshire Hathaway made net stock purchases of nearly $20 billion, including about $10 billion in a private placement of Google's parent company, Alphabet, to support its investments in AI data centers, among others. They also spent around $6.8 billion to acquire home builder Taylor Morrison in a deal that was a complete acquisition, not just a public market stock trade. Additionally, around $4.5 billion was used to repurchase Berkshire's own stock. Excluding these major items, there is still approximately $3 billion of "unexplained" net purchases of public market equities, with details on specific stocks to be disclosed in the 13F filing on August 14th. Alphabet has now officially entered Berkshire's top five holdings, alongside American Express, Apple, Bank of America, and Coca-Cola. These top five holdings together account for about 66% of the stock portfolio.

Previously, Buffett mentioned that the long net selling cycle was mainly due to high market valuations, making it difficult to find sufficiently attractive opportunities. This shift is seen as a clear signal of a more proactive capital allocation strategy after Abel took over as CEO, indicating that Berkshire Hathaway is transitioning from "being patient" to "taking action."
