South Korea continues to strengthen its "Sovereign AI" initiative by establishing a ₩1 trillion AI infrastructure fund, with a focus on investing in data centers and energy facilities.

BlockBeats News, August 5th — The Korea Post Industry Headquarters of the Ministry of Science and ICT signed a business cooperation agreement today with the Industrial Bank of Korea at the IBK headquarters on Yeouido Island, Seoul. They will jointly invest to establish the "AI Infrastructure Fund" with a scale of 1 trillion Korean won, specializing in investments in next-generation AI data centers and energy infrastructure, among other national strategic industries. The two parties plan to collectively explore and invest in high-quality AI infrastructure projects to further expand financial cooperation. Minister of the Korea Post Industry Headquarters, Park In-hwan, stated: "Ensuring the stability of AI infrastructure such as data centers and power grids has become crucial in determining national competitiveness. As an institution responsible for managing the nation's valuable assets, we will continue to expand infrastructure investments to drive the country's future growth on the basis of stability and profitability."

This collaboration marks the two institutions' joint investment after a hiatus of about 20 years. In 2006, they jointly established an infrastructure fund and invested in national infrastructure projects such as the Ulsan Science and Technology University, Incheon International Airport Railway, Sinbundang Line, and power plants. This cooperation aligns with the South Korean government's policy to promote productive financial activation, leveraging policy funds in the core infrastructure sector of the AI era to mobilize private capital. Previously, the South Korean government has consistently increased its investment in AI and digital infrastructure through initiatives such as the "Korean Won Internationalization Roadmap" and the "Sovereign AI" project. The joint investment by the Korea Post Industry Headquarters and the Industrial Bank signifies further public fund support for this sector.
