Can KAS Survive Another Crypto Cycle? The Signals That Matter Now

Kaspa activated Toccata on June 30, adding native covenant and zero-knowledge infrastructure after Crescendo had already moved the network to ten blocks per second. Yet the market response has been muted: KAS remains about 86% below its historical high, KRC-20 liquidity has contracted sharply, and Kasplex and Igra still operate at a small economic scale. The tension is therefore no longer whether Kaspa can ship difficult protocol upgrades. It is whether those upgrades can create recurring demand before declining block subsidies put more pressure on miners.
CoinEx Research will examine Kaspa’s ecosystem retention, programmable demand, mining economics, and market structure to identify the signals that could determine whether KAS survives another cycle.
KRC-20 Was Kaspa’s First Survival Test
The KRC-20 Boom Was Real
During KRC-20’s 2024 expansion, Kaspa’s daily active addresses reportedly rose from below 20,000 to above 90,000, while daily transactions moved from below 150,000 to more than 8 million. The protocol recorded more than 30 million KRC-20 transactions, roughly 40 million KAS in cumulative fees, and over 900 deployed tokens. It was a real stress test for a proof-of-work network built around block-DAG throughput.
By July 16, 2026, the indexer showed 144.4 million cumulative operations and 2,153 tokens. These totals prove historical capacity, not current demand: cumulative operations do not reveal how many users or dollars remain active.
Liquidity and Activity Did Not Survive
Current flows are much weaker. Six tracked KRC-20 assets were 97.4%–99.6% below their highs on July 16. Kaspiano recorded 1,175 trades and about $13,706 of 30-day volume. It covers one marketplace—not CEX, OTC, or all peer-to-peer activity—but still illustrates thin visible liquidity.

An illustrative cross-source comparison points the same way: CoinEx Research valued NACHO near $50 million and KASPER near $7.5 million in 2024; current Kaspa.com snapshots were about $3.07 million and $0.27 million. The dates and providers differ, so these are not like-for-like drawdowns. They nevertheless support the broader collapse in liquidity.
KRC-20 Proved Capacity, Not Retention
KRC-20 validated capacity: Kaspa processed congestion, generated temporary miner fees, and attracted wallets. It did not validate repeat users, durable applications, or stable capital. The next cycle therefore cannot rely on another issuance rush; marketplace volume, active wallets, holders, and fees must persist after minting demand fades.
Kaspa’s L2s Are Live—But Adoption Is Still Unproven
Kasplex Lost Most of Its Launch Momentum
Kasplex mainnet launched in September 2025 and peaked at 7,613 weekly active accounts. In the complete week through July 12, 2026, it had 169—a 97.8% decline. Monthly transactions fell from 186,790 in October to 30,433 in June, down 83.7%. DefiLlama also showed only about $409,500 of TVL, $107,900 of 24-hour DEX volume, and $10 of daily chain fees. KrokoSwap held roughly 63% of TVL, while the top two protocols held about 82%.Kasplex is live, but broad, retained demand remains absent.
Igra Shows Transactions Without Comparable User Growth
Igra’s complete week had 368 active accounts, down 66.8% from its 1,110 peak, while monthly transactions rose from 737,552 in April to 1.30 million in June.It generated about 840 transactions per active account, versus 37 on Kasplex. This is descriptive, not proof of human or economically organic use.
All six transactions in Igra’s latest main-page sample were attest or attestDelegated calls. The sample is far too small for a chain-wide estimate, but shows how system settlement can affect transaction counts. Igra’s $1.65 million of TVL and $378,000 of bridged USDC are more useful demand indicators, although its top two protocols held about 98.6% of TVL.

What Would Count as Real Product-Market Fit?
Product-market fit requires several measures to improve together: retained users, stablecoins, price-adjusted TVL, DEX volume, application revenue, and protocol diversity.

Attestations can be useful infrastructure demand. But when transactions rise while users, capital, fees, and application breadth stay flat, their economic meaning is limited. The L2s prove operation, not durable demand.
The Fundamentals Still Supporting KAS
Ten BPS and Toccata Reduce Technical Execution Risk
Kaspa’s strongest remaining fundamental is repeated consensus delivery. Crescendo moved mainnet from one to ten blocks per second in May 2025. Toccata activated on June 30, 2026, bringing ZK verification, expanded covenants, stable covenant identifiers, and application lanes to mainnet. KIP-15 had already provided sequencing commitments for L2 systems.
This reduces protocol-delivery risk, not application risk. Toccata’s documentation describes Argent and vProgs interfaces as evolving. Consensus features can precede mature wallets, developer tools, audits, and applications.
From KAS’s CoinEx period-peak close on July 31, 2024 through July 15, 2026, KAS fell about 86%; BTC was roughly flat and ETH fell about 41% on the same venue and dates. Shipping did not reverse the relative weakness.

Fair Launch and Low Remaining Dilution Still Matter
Project documentation says KAS launched without a premine, preallocation, ICO, or vesting allocation; supply entered through proof-of-work mining.The official API reported 27.58 billion KAS issued against an approximately 28.70 billion maximum on July 16—about 96.1%.
This limits scheduled team or investor unlock risk. Fair launch does not prove decentralized ownership today, and low remaining issuance is not demand; it removes one common source of structural selling pressure.
Programmability Is Shipped—Value Capture Is Not
Kaspa now has fast L1 ordering, native covenants, ZK verification, sequencing commitments, and two operating L2s. The unresolved question is who must acquire or spend KAS when these systems are used.
Value capture requires recurring KAS-denominated fees or meaningful use as gas, collateral, bridge liquidity, or settlement. Bridge-address balances are capital proxies—not TVL, net deposits, or unique users. Until proofs, covenants, sequencing, and bridges create measurable L1 fees or recurring KAS balances, programmability is an option on demand rather than realized demand.
The Security Budget Could Decide KAS’s Next Cycle
Falling Emissions Improve Scarcity but Pressure Miners
Kaspa’s block reward declines monthly. At 2.44997148 KAS per block and ten blocks per second, the network issued an estimated 2.12 million KAS per day on July 16—about $60,700, or a current-reward annualized run rate of 2.8% of official supply.[10]
Declining issuance means less dilution but lower KAS-denominated miner revenue unless fees grow. A weak KAS price can compress the dollar security budget further.
Kaspa Hashrate Has Reset From Its Peak
Official data placed Kaspa hashrate near 316.8 PH/s on July 16, 80.1% below its 1.59 EH/s January 2025 maximum.[10] This does not make the network automatically insecure, and cross-algorithm comparisons are misleading. It shows that hashpower competing for Kaspa rewards has reset substantially.

The signal is whether hashrate and miner revenue stabilize as emissions decline. Stabilization alongside higher fees would suggest that security can be funded under a lower-subsidy regime.
Fees Must Become More Than a Temporary Spike
KRC-20 showed that demand can produce fees, but temporary minting is not a durable security budget. Toccata and the L2s add potential sources through covenants, ZK verification, sequencing, bridges, and settlement.
Kaspa’s public API lacks a complete historical total-fee series, so fee share cannot be reconstructed reliably. The thesis strengthens when recurring fees become observable and replace a meaningful share of subsidy—not when transaction totals merely spike.
Four Signals That Will Determine Whether KAS Survives
Organic Users and Stablecoin Liquidity
Confirmation requires retained users, stablecoins, DEX volume, price-adjusted TVL, revenue, and application diversity to grow together. Rising transactions without users or capital weaken the thesis.
L1 Fee Capture and Miner Economics
Confirmation requires visible L1 fees, stable hashrate, and less subsidy-dependent miner revenue. Current data measures rewards and hashpower, not historical fee share; closing that gap matters more than another throughput benchmark.
Spot-Led Market Strength
KAS needs sustained strength against BTC and ETH, deeper spot liquidity, and volume that absorbs supply without leverage. On July 16, CoinGlass showed $32.1 million of aggregate open interest. Futures-to-spot turnover was 13.6 times in that snapshot and 28.9 times on CoinEx.
Production Applications, Not Roadmap Optionality
Confirmation requires audited applications, wallet support, recurring covenant use, mainnet ZK proofs, and sequencing tied to users or revenue. DAGKnight remains proposed and vProgs is evolving; neither is present adoption.

Kaspa’s case is mixed: technologically credible, with major upgrades, fair-launch tokenomics, and live programmability; economically unproven, with weak KRC-20 retention, small L2 adoption, unclear value capture, and declining emissions. KAS can survive another cycle only if infrastructure becomes recurring users, fees, and spot demand. These signals—not another roadmap—will reveal that conversion.
