Musk: AI Disaster Risk 'Not Zero,' But Humans Shouldn't Hit the Brakes, Everyone Will Experience Unprecedented Prosperity
  • GOOGLX0%

According to DynaBeat Monitoring, Musk elaborated on his latest stance on AI during an interview with The Economist, stating that although the risk of AI and robotic runaway creating a disaster is "not zero," he still believes that humanity should not hinder its development. He said, "Sometimes I even wonder, even if there was a stop button, we might not want to press it because the most likely outcome would be unprecedented prosperity for all."

Musk predicted that AI will surpass the total sum of human intelligence in about five years. At that point, unless faced with a major disaster such as a global nuclear war, the world will enter a remarkable era of abundance where people can have almost everything they can imagine. When asked if his previous assessment of a "10% to 20% probability of AI catastrophic runaway" still holds, Musk replied affirmatively and used a rocket analogy, saying, "If a rocket had the same explosion probability, I would still ride it because assuming you can't do anything about it, the only thing you can do is to minimize the probability of a bad outcome as much as possible."

Musk's stance on AI has undergone a significant evolution: in 2014, he compared AI development to summoning a demon, in 2018 he stated that "AI is much more dangerous than nuclear weapons," and in 2025 he still believed that there was a 10% to 20% probability of killer robots wiping out humanity. However, this year he has clearly shifted towards a utopian narrative—stating in January that saving for retirement will become meaningless and predicting this month that AI and robots will make work optional, creating a high-income society for all.

Musk emphasized that it is highly unlikely that humans will continue to control AI in the next decade. He said, "If you think you can control a superintelligent AI that is much smarter than you, that is hubris," and that what should truly be done is to ensure that AI has the right values and cares about human well-being.

Musk also revealed that he has advised Google DeepMind CEO, Demis Hassabis, that CEOs of the world's leading AI companies should regularly hold conference calls to discuss AI safety and cybersecurity issues together. He believes that even competitors can supervise and balance each other.
