BlockBeats News, August 12th, Nvidia is collaborating with Google, Microsoft, and over 80 device and infrastructure vendors to promote an 800V direct current power supply architecture. This initiative aims to address the power efficiency and conversion loss issues in response to the continuous increase in AI server rack power density. Nvidia plans to gradually introduce this architecture into existing AI factories starting from the second half of 2026.
Nvidia stated that the current bottleneck of AI infrastructure is no longer just the total power supply wattage, but the efficiency of delivering power from the grid to the GPU. The 800V direct current architecture can reduce the power conversion steps between the grid and the accelerator. In the second half of 2026, the company plans to launch 800V DC power racks compatible with the MGX architecture, allowing existing data centers to upgrade gradually without the need for significant building or power system modifications.
For new or high-density AI factories, Nvidia plans to introduce rack-level power centers in 2027, delivering power to multiple rack columns via overhead 800V DC busbars, with each rack column supporting up to 2MW of power. In the long term, the company plans to deploy DC Power Blocks at the facility level, directly converting grid power to 800V DC.
Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft are also driving relevant standardization through the Open Compute Project. As AI servers transition from the hundred-kilowatt level to the megawatt level, equipment specifications such as high-voltage DC/DC converters, solid-state transformers, busbars, power semiconductors, and power modules will also be upgraded.
