Dynamic Beating AI Newsflash: NVIDIA has established the NVIDIA Political Action Committee (NVPAC), which can make donations to US federal candidates and party committees. The funds do not come directly from NVIDIA's corporate account but are voluntarily contributed by eligible employees, with a maximum of $5,000 per person per year. The PAC can support both Democratic and Republican parties simultaneously, and the recipients and amounts of donations must be disclosed to the Federal Election Commission.
This is not a Super PAC that can raise and spend unlimited funds, but rather an employee PAC commonly seen in major US corporations. Tech companies like Google and Meta have had similar organizations for years, and in April of this year, Anthropic also established AnthroPAC. As of the end of July, AnthroPAC has raised approximately $350,000.
NVIDIA has recently been notably increasing its presence in Washington. The company's federal lobbying spending has exceeded $2.5 million this year, surpassing the same period last year. In June, NVIDIA also hired Bruce Andrews, who previously served as Deputy Secretary of Commerce in the Obama administration, as Chief External Affairs Officer, and engaged several external lobbying firms simultaneously.
In an email to employees, NVIDIA explained that the policies enacted by Congress in the coming years will directly impact the AI industry and whether customers can access and use NVIDIA's technology. As policies concerning AI regulation, chip exports, and other matters increasingly affect business operations, NVIDIA is expanding its political influence from lobbying to electoral donations.
