BlockBeats News, July 29th, according to The Information, Google (GOOG.O) disclosed last week that it has agreed to take on third-party data center lease obligations worth as much as $44 billion in the event of tenant defaults.
This figure is up from $6.5 billion as of the end of September, reflecting Google's efforts to provide an alternative to Nvidia's AI chips to companies such as Anthropic. Google is said to have taken on these commitments, known as "backstop support," to scale up its TPU sales.
Two sources revealed that Google made these commitments based on the consideration that the revenue from TPU sales would exceed the financial obligations incurred to guarantee the data center leases for accommodating these chips. One of the sources said company executives are confident that this financial calculation is favorable to Alphabet.
The report stated that Alphabet has provided lease guarantees for around ten projects with a total capacity of about 2.4 gigawatts. These projects are currently not yet completed, meaning Alphabet's guarantee measures have not taken effect.
