Samsung's HBM4 Yield Rate Reaches 80% Four Months Ahead of Schedule, Aiming to Increase HBM Market Share to Around 38% by the End of the Year

BlockBeats News, August 9th. According to the South Korean newspaper Seoul Economic Daily, Samsung Electronics, which was the first in the world to mass-produce and ship the sixth-generation High Bandwidth Memory HBM4 in February this year, has recently achieved a yield rate close to 80%. The initial yield rate during mass production was less than 60%, but it stabilized within six months, reaching about 80% ahead of the original year-end target by approximately 4 months. The semiconductor industry typically refers to an 80% yield rate as the "golden yield," meaning that a company can ensure stable production volume, reduce defect rates, and enhance profitability simultaneously.

Samsung Electronics stated that as the HBM4 yield rate entered a stable range, the company plans to increase third-quarter HBM4 revenue to more than triple that of the previous quarter and raise the proportion of HBM4 in overall HBM revenue in the second half of the year to over 60%. The company has also set a goal to increase its HBM market share to about 38%, similar to its DRAM market share, by the end of the year. The increased supply of HBM4 will also drive the production of NVIDIA's Vera Rubin AI accelerator.

Professor Lee Jong-hwan from the System Semiconductor Engineering Department at South Korea's Sangmyung University mentioned that for major customers like NVIDIA, sourcing from multiple suppliers is more advantageous than relying on a single company. Samsung Electronics can leverage the expanded HBM4 supply to quickly increase its market share.
