According to The Wall Street Journal, he dropped out of Northeastern University in 2023 after conducting research in machine learning and programming languages at Northeastern and MIT.

Shinn's most notable research is Reflexion. He was the first author of the NeurIPS 2023 paper, proposing that an Agent summarize errors after failures, form memories, and utilize them for the next task. The paper achieved a 91% pass@1 on HumanEval, surpassing the GPT-4 results of 80% reported in the paper.

He later contributed to the development of the Agent evaluation τ-bench, testing whether models could communicate with users, invoke tools, adhere to business rules, and maintain stability across multiple runs. Shinn then joined the enterprise AI Agent company Sierra as one of its earliest employees, serving as a Research Scientist.

This journey almost directly led to today's Instinct: Agent reflection, tool invocation, real-world task evaluation, enterprise Agent experience, culminating in creating a personal Agent.
