Foreign Investors Net Sell Over 120 Trillion KRW of South Korean Stocks in July, While KOSPI Index Drops Over 19%

According to the Korean media Etoday, from July 1st to July 16th, foreign investors were net sellers of ₩12.1022 trillion on the KOSPI market and net sellers of ₩3381 billion on the KOSDAQ market. During the same period, the KOSPI index dropped from 8476.48 points on June 30th to 6820.60 points.

In contrast to the stock market, foreign investors were net buyers of ₩5937 billion worth of ETFs in South Korea during the same period. Among them, the KODEX Leverage ETF saw a net purchase of ₩1950 billion, the KODEX 200 saw a net purchase of ₩1806 billion, and the KODEX 200 Futures Inverse 2x ETF saw a net purchase of ₩1300 billion.

Foreign investors also bought products tracking the KOSPI 200 index and inverse ETFs, which was interpreted as portfolio adjustments in a high-volatility market rather than one-way bets. In terms of individual stock leveraged ETFs, foreign investors net bought ₩227 billion worth of Samsung Electronics-related products but net sold ₩1221 billion worth of SK Hynix-related products.

Furthermore, foreign investors were also net buyers of ₩1020 billion worth of the US Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ETF and ₩627 billion worth of the US Nasdaq 100 Daily Hedged Strategy ETF.
