BlockBeats News, August 5th. The U.S. government is reportedly drafting a new ban to prohibit the import of Chinese-manufactured next-generation data center optical transceivers to strengthen control over the artificial intelligence infrastructure supply chain.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is developing relevant restriction measures, with U.S. officials planning to announce and implement the ban by 2026. However, the measure is still in the discussion stage and may be subject to future modifications or delays.

Optical transceivers are core components in optical modules responsible for converting electrical signals to optical signals, playing a crucial role in high-speed data transmission in AI data centers. If the ban is put in place, the global optical module supply chain may be affected.

Reports indicate that leading global optical module supplier Intelight may face repercussions. According to Counterpoint Research data, Intelight currently holds around 27% of the global data center optical transceiver market. A previous report by the U.S. Innovation Foundation stated that domestic U.S. suppliers Coherent and Lumentum do not have sufficient capacity to fully replace Chinese suppliers.

Simultaneously, this measure could also drive up costs for U.S. cloud service companies. Major cloud computing firms like Amazon may need to turn to U.S. suppliers to procure optical communication equipment to meet the demands of AI data center expansion.

The market believes that the U.S. restricting the import of Chinese optical communication components reflects that AI infrastructure competition is further extending from the chip sector to the data center supply chain, including key links such as optical modules, power equipment, and server components.
