US Media Reports Trump Administration Refuses to Rejoin Agreement Reached with Iran in June

According to The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter, the Trump administration has repeatedly informed mediators that it has no intention of reaccepting the terms of the memorandum of understanding reached with Iran in June. Trump has now shifted to pressuring Iran through economic means and is willing to wait and see if this strategy works. The June agreement was originally planned to relax sanctions, allow Iran to access frozen overseas funds, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and initiate negotiations on the nuclear issue and ending the war. However, it collapsed weeks later after Iran attacked ships.

Iran, on the other hand, insists on the US resuming the implementation of the June agreement and believes that Article V of the agreement actually acknowledges Iran's right to determine the conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has stated that only if the US resumes the implementation of the agreement, grants Iran waivers for oil sales, and ends the maritime blockade, will Iran reopen the strait. Recently, Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar have successively engaged in mediation, but progress has been limited. Analysts say that the memorandum of understanding reached in June has effectively become invalid, and both sides are now preparing for a situation escalation.
