BlockBeats News, September 3rd, a federal judge on Wednesday rejected the U.S. Department of Justice's request to split Google's (GOOG.O) online advertising business. This ruling is of historical significance, effectively putting an end to Alphabet's Google’s nearly 20 years of antitrust risk.
As early as the Obama administration, the U.S. law enforcement agencies had considered bringing an antitrust lawsuit against Google. However, judges have always been strongly averse to breaking up companies, considering such a remedy too drastic. Wednesday's ruling is the latest example. U.S. Judge Leonie Brinkema took a more restrained approach to how to punish Google. In a ruling last year, she found that Google illegally monopolized the complex online advertising market for websites.
The U.S. Department of Justice believed that forcing Google to sell its ad tech platform was the only way to curb its market dominance and open the market to new competitors. Brinkema disagreed. In a two-page ruling, she adopted alternative measures to limit Google's ability to control publishers using its ad tech.
