BlockBeats News, June 23rd. According to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Trump signed two executive orders on Monday aimed at accelerating the development of advanced quantum computing and mitigating the security threats it poses. One of the executive orders requires federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, to collaborate with the private sector and academia to deploy a quantum computer powerful enough to conduct scientific research by 2028. The goal is seen as a crucial milestone in proving the practical application capabilities of quantum computing. During the signing ceremony, Trump stated that the U.S. will invest in quantum leadership like never before and emphasized that the related executive orders should expand America's leading position in the field.
Another executive order requires federal agencies and government security experts to prepare for quantum systems to potentially break standard encryption sooner than previously expected, with the aim of strengthening government and private sector security systems to prevent advanced quantum hackers from attacking critical infrastructure. This security-related executive order mandates that all agencies develop quantum attack-resistant systems by 2031, advancing the target set by the Biden administration for 2035, and prioritizing security reinforcement plans for critical infrastructure such as utilities and water treatment plants.
Trump also instructed the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Department of Defense to deploy quantum sensors within the next five years. This technology, based on quantum mechanics, offers an alternative to traditional global positioning systems and may be used for space exploration and in warfare scenarios where GPS jamming is prevalent.
