The Trump administration has demanded that Iran commit to refraining from firing at ships in the Strait of Hormuz by Saturday.

BlockBeats News, July 11th, according to Axios reports, the Trump administration has requested Iran to publicly declare by no later than Saturday, confirming the Strait of Hormuz remains open and pledging to cease firing on commercial vessels. U.S. officials stated that this request has been conveyed to Iran through direct channels as well as regional intermediaries.

The U.S. believes that Iran’s recent attacks on commercial ships in and around the Strait of Hormuz have violated a memorandum of understanding signed by both parties weeks ago, putting the fragile ceasefire agreement at risk of collapsing. Reports indicate that Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi is expected to meet with Omani Foreign Minister Al-Busaidi in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on Saturday to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. hopes that Iran will issue a public statement after this meeting, committing to cease attacks and confirming the open and toll-free passage of the strait. U.S. officials stated that there has been some progress in U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations recently, but the Hormuz crisis has raised concerns within the U.S. about Iran’s ability to adhere to more complex agreements. If Iran refuses the related requests, the U.S. has warned that further actions will be taken.
