Report: Q2 Stablecoin Cross-Border Payments Exchange Rate Continues to be Below Interbank Exchange Rate, with Routing Optimization as Key Cost Variable
  • USDC0%
  • FX0%
  • USDT0%

BlockBeats News, July 13th - Cross-border payment infrastructure platform Borderless.xyz released its "Q2 2026 Benchmark Report," showing that stablecoin cross-border payments throughout the second quarter had an actual exchange rate that outperformed the Interbank FX Rate, achieving a rare negative premium in the traditional cross-border payment system.

The data shows that the median "Parity Gap" for stablecoin payments in the second quarter was -3.2 basis points, further expanding to -5.9 basis points in June, meaning that users ultimately received a better exchange rate than the interbank mid-rate. Meanwhile, the average cost of sending a $10,000 cross-border payment remained at around $27, staying relatively stable for five consecutive months.

The report points out that as the cost of stablecoin cross-border payments becomes more standardized, payment routing has become the most significant area for cost optimization for enterprises. If an enterprise relies on a single payment service provider long-term instead of dynamically selecting the best quote, they will incur an average cost of about $2,330 for every $1 million transferred, which Borderless refers to as a "Routing Tax."

Furthermore, the price differences of different stablecoins in various payment channels remain significant. For example, in the Peru payment corridor, USDC has maintained a price advantage of about 99 basis points over USDT in the long term, while in the Brazilian Real payment channel, the lowest-quoting service provider changed 34 times within 88 days, with an average change occurring every 2.6 days.

In terms of regional performance, Latin America and Asia have seen stable payment costs, while Africa has shown the most significant fluctuations. In particular, the spread in the Malawi payment channel once widened to 1975 basis points, and the spread in the Ghanaian USDC payment channel increased by 596% during the quarter. Borderless stated that stablecoin cross-border payments have entered a competition-driven stage, and in the future, the smart routing ability of payment service providers will be a key competitive advantage for enterprises to reduce costs.
