BlockBeats News, August 6th, according to CNBC, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned that the current financial market leverage remains high, margin debt has reached a historic level, and some borrowing is not directly classified as margin debt but is hidden in prime brokers, hedge funds, ETFs, and U.S. Treasury arbitrage strategies.
Dimon stated that high leverage increases the possibility of a single investor or fund quickly disrupting the market and causing more widespread volatility. Recently, AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness faced margin calls due to leveraged tech stock bets gone awry and was forced to liquidate most of its public stock portfolio.
However, Dimon did not define the current leverage level as a systemic threat. He noted that the overall market can still absorb the failure of individual institutions and emphasized that the current environment is different from the 2008 financial crisis, where the imminent massive losses in the mortgage market were the real shock, not just leverage itself.
Dimon also stated that as market volatility rises, clearinghouses and banks typically demand more collateral. Meanwhile, government deficits, infrastructure investments, and global rearmament could re-ignite inflationary pressures and support higher long-term interest rates.
