BIP-110 Fails to Gain Traction, Bitcoin Soft Fork Proposal BIP-54 Activation Uncertain
  • BTC0%

BlockBeats News, August 13th. BIP-54, formally known as "Consensus Cleanup," aims to make four limited modifications to Bitcoin's core rules. The proposal seeks to patch up old vulnerabilities and unusual edge cases rather than introduce new ways to use Bitcoin. Supporters believe this distinction is crucial: it is a preventive maintenance of a network that is now far more valuable than when many rules were established.

F2pool co-founder Wang Chun stated that he does not support the proposal. He explained that if BIP-54 gains the required majority support through the standard BIP-9 activation process, F2Pool will update its mining nodes, but the pool will not signal support in advance. Wang Chun's objections mainly focus on the process and priority. He believes that bundling four changes together is similar to packaging unrelated measures into one bill. He thinks that some of the changes pose risks that are too remote to justify the coordination, software upgrades, and community attention required for a soft fork. A soft fork changes Bitcoin's rules in a way that old software may not be able to enforce.

Supporters have a different view on this "packaging." They argue that each consensus change carries a high social cost, so bundling several defensive fixes together can reduce the number of difficult network-wide activations. They also argue that the continuous rise in Bitcoin's value gives attackers more reason to explore what used to be only theoretical weaknesses.
